How the conversion works

Eastern Time is not a single fixed offset. The United States observes daylight saving time, so the offset changes twice a year:

So:

Eastern Time = UTC + offset  where  offset = −5 (EST) or −4 (EDT)

Worked example. 12:00 UTC on 31 August 2026 falls inside daylight saving, so the offset is −4:

12:00 − 4h = 08:00 EDT

The same 12:00 UTC on 15 January 2026 falls outside daylight saving, so the offset is −5:

12:00 − 5h = 07:00 EST

Frequently asked questions

Is EST the same as EDT?
No. EST is Eastern Standard Time (UTC−5), used in winter, while EDT is Eastern Daylight Time (UTC−4), used during daylight saving. This converter detects which one applies to your date and labels the result accordingly.
What is the current offset between UTC and Eastern Time?
Eastern Time is UTC−5 during Eastern Standard Time and UTC−4 during Eastern Daylight Time. Daylight saving in the US runs from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November.
Is this converter free and private?
Yes. It is completely free, requires no signup, and all calculations run locally in your browser. Nothing you enter is uploaded.
Which cities use Eastern Time?
New York, Toronto, Miami, Philadelphia, Boston, Atlanta, Washington D.C. and Detroit all observe Eastern Time. Note that not every location in the Eastern time zone observes daylight saving.
